Early summer feeds help strengthen the grass plants so they can withstand the heat and drought conditions that can occur in summer, and leaving the blades longer at this time of year will enable the grass to absorb as much of the limited amounts of sun shine as possible.
Around April will be your early summer and second lawn feed of the year, a slow release granular feed will continue working for between 4 and 6 weeks so should be repeated around 4 weeks later and should continue until the end of May.
